Influential Twin Cities developer, Kelly Doran, dies at 66

Kelly Doran, the figure behind some of the most influential and high-profile development projects in the Twin Cities, passed away on Dec. 28, 2023, at the age of 66 after a battle with cancer. His portfolio of projects ranged in scope from high-end, luxury apartments to student housing. At the time of his death, he had completed more than 3,500 multifamily units.

The Duluth native earned an undergraduate and MBA from the University of Minnesota and began his career in real estate with a retail development group. After many years of retail development, he founded The Doran Group in 2007 and began building and developing residential spaces.

“Kelly was larger than life, lived boldly and had a giant heart. He loved to tell stories and laugh, while always seeing the silver lining in any situation,” said The Doran Group in a statement. “…Kelly loved to lead in the creation of designs that added to the fabric of the community. The handprints of this work on innovative design are located throughout our communities.”
